Free XML Sitemap Checker
Enter a domain or sitemap URL. The analyzer finds your sitemap (via robots.txt if needed), opens every child sitemap and .xml.gz file, and audits all the URLs inside — not a sample.
What gets checked
- Discovery — whether robots.txt declares the sitemap with a
Sitemap:line, so every crawler can find it without Search Console. - Completeness — total URLs, child sitemaps that failed to load, and the 50,000-URL-per-file limit from the sitemaps protocol.
- lastmod — how many URLs carry a last-modified date, whether the dates parse, and how fresh they are.
- Consistency — http vs https, www vs non-www, trailing slashes, query-parameter URLs and URLs on other hosts.
- Duplicates and malformed entries.
Reading the results
A sitemap should list only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200. Mixed hosts or protocols mean you're listing URLs that redirect. Parameter URLs usually mean filters or tracking links leaked in. Duplicates waste crawl budget without adding anything.
lastmod is the field that matters most in practice. Google has said it uses lastmod when it's consistently accurate, and ignores it when every URL shows today's date. Set it to the date the content really changed. The freshness chart shows whether your dates look real.
Why sitemaps matter for AI crawlers
AI search crawlers find new pages the same way search engines do: links and sitemaps. A clean sitemap with accurate lastmod dates helps them discover updated content sooner, which matters when AI answers quote your pricing or product details. Check the listed URLs don't redirect with the redirect checker, and make sure robots.txt lets the crawlers in with the AI crawler checker.
FAQ
Questions
Where is my sitemap?+
Usually at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml, and it should be listed in robots.txt. Enter just the domain and the tool checks robots.txt first, then /sitemap.xml.
Are there limits on large sitemaps?+
To keep the free tool fast it opens up to 60 child sitemaps and 100,000 URLs, within about 40 seconds. If a limit is hit, the result is marked partial. The URL table shows the first 2,000 entries; the stats cover all collected URLs.
Should every page be in the sitemap?+
Every page you want indexed, and nothing else. Leave out redirects, noindex pages, duplicates and URLs blocked by robots.txt.
