What is llms.txt?

An llms.txt, written and validated · illustrative

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a website that gives language models a short, curated map of the site. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org. Where a sitemap lists every URL for crawlers, llms.txt picks the pages that explain what you do and describes them in plain words, so a model reading it can find the right source without parsing navigation menus and scripts.

The format is small:

  1. An H1 with the site or project name — the only required part.
  2. A blockquote with a one-sentence summary.
  3. Optional paragraphs with extra context (no headings).
  4. H2 sections, each a list of links in the form - [Name](https://url): note.
  5. An optional section titled ## Optional for links that can be skipped when context is short.

How to write a good one

Start with the summary. It's the sentence most likely to be read, so state what you are, who it's for and the one thing that sets you apart — in words you'd want repeated. Then add the pages that answer the questions people ask about you: product or service pages, pricing, documentation, comparison pages, policies, contact.

Leave out tag archives, login pages and thin blog posts. A note after each link ("pricing for all plans, updated monthly") helps a model decide which page to open. Use absolute URLs. If you publish Markdown versions of pages, link those; the proposal suggests serving them at the same URL with .md appended.

The import button reads your homepage and pulls its internal links as a starting point. Prune hard: ten well-described links beat sixty unlabeled ones.

Does llms.txt help with AI search?

Treat it as a low-cost addition, not a ranking factor. The file is a proposal, and support differs by engine and tool; check each engine's own documentation before assuming it's read. Where it helps most today is with AI assistants and coding agents that fetch it on request, and with anyone building on your docs.

What reliably matters more is that AI crawlers are allowed in and can read your pages without JavaScript. Check that with the AI crawler checker and the AI crawler view, then validate your published file with the llms.txt validator.

FAQ

Questions

Where do I upload llms.txt?+

At the root of your domain, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Serve it as plain text (text/plain or text/markdown) with a 200 status. On most CMSs you can upload it as a static file or add a route that returns it.

What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?+

llms.txt is a short index of links. llms-full.txt is a common companion that contains the full text of the important pages in one Markdown file, so a model can read everything without following links. Documentation sites use both.

Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or my sitemap?+

No. robots.txt controls which crawlers may access what, and the XML sitemap lists every URL for indexing. llms.txt does neither; it's a curated reading guide. Keep all three.

How often should I update it?+

Whenever a key page is added, renamed or removed — new product, new pricing page, retired docs. Broken links in llms.txt point models at 404s, so check it after site migrations.
