Free AEO Checker & GEO Audit
Grade any page A–F on how ready it is for AI search. The audit runs 22 checks across crawler access, site files, structured data, content and meta tags, and tells you what to fix first.
What the AEO checker looks at
Answer engine optimization (AEO), also called generative engine optimization (GEO), is the work of getting your pages read, understood and cited by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. This checker covers the technical half of that work — the part you can verify from the page itself.
- Crawler access — whether robots.txt lets the search and training bots of OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Google reach this URL. Search bots weigh more, because they feed the answers that cite you.
- Site files — HTTPS, robots.txt, llms.txt and an XML sitemap.
- Structured data — valid JSON-LD, an Organization (or LocalBusiness) entity, and markup describing the content: Article, Product, FAQPage and so on.
- Content — how much text exists in the raw HTML before JavaScript runs, a single H1, question-style headings and a
<main>landmark. - Meta tags — title, description, canonical, noindex and og:image.
How to read the grade
Each check is worth points; a warning earns half. The grade is the share of points earned: A from 85%, B from 70%, C from 55%, D from 40%, F below that. The bars show which category costs you the most.
Fix failures before warnings, and fix them in this order: anything that blocks access (a search bot disallowed, a noindex tag, content that only appears after JavaScript), then entity signals (Organization schema), then polish. A page that AI crawlers can't read will not be cited however good its schema is.
The grade measures readiness, not visibility. A page can score A and still never be mentioned, because engines also weigh what other sites say about you. To see whether you actually appear in answers, use the AI visibility checker.
Why these signals matter for AI search
AI search engines retrieve pages first and write the answer second. Retrieval depends on the same basics as classic search: the crawler must be allowed in, the content must be in the HTML it downloads, and the page must say plainly what it is. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so a client-rendered page can look empty to them while looking fine in your browser.
Structured data and clear headings help at the next step, when a model picks passages to quote. The GEO paper from Princeton and others (arXiv:2311.09735) found that content changes such as adding sources, statistics and quotations changed how often pages were cited in generated answers. This checker won't judge your writing, but it makes sure nothing technical stands in the way.
FAQ
Questions
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?+
They describe the same goal: being included and cited in AI-generated answers. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older term from featured snippets and voice search; GEO (generative engine optimization) comes from the 2023 research paper. The checks are the same.
Is llms.txt required to score well?+
No. llms.txt is an optional proposal and no major engine has confirmed using it for ranking. It is worth a few points here because it's cheap to add and gives models a clean map of your site, but its absence only counts as a warning.
Why does my site score lower than in SEO tools?+
SEO tools mostly measure what Googlebot needs. This audit adds AI-specific checks: whether AI search bots are allowed, whether content exists without JavaScript, and whether entity and content schema is present. Many well-ranked sites miss one of those.
Can I audit a single page instead of the homepage?+
Yes. Paste any URL. Crawler rules are evaluated for that exact path, and content, schema and meta checks run on that page, while site files (robots.txt, llms.txt, sitemap) are read from the site root.
