Free Meta Tag Checker
Enter a URL to list every meta tag that matters — title, description, canonical, robots, hreflang, Open Graph, Twitter and the technical basics — with length checks and clear notes on what's missing.
The tags it reads
The checker downloads the page's HTML and reads the <head>: the title, the meta description, the canonical link, meta robots, hreflang alternates, the six core Open Graph tags, four Twitter card tags, viewport, charset and the lang attribute. It also reads the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header, which can noindex a page without leaving any trace in the HTML.
Tags are grouped so you can scan search tags first and social tags second.
Length guidelines
- Title: 30–60 characters. Search results cut long titles by pixel width; around 60 characters usually fits. Put the main keyword first.
- Meta description: 70–160 characters. Search engines often rewrite it, but a good one is still used when it matches the query, and AI systems read it as a summary.
- og:title and og:description can differ from the search versions — shorter and more direct usually works better in feeds.
Tags that quietly break things
A leftover noindex from a staging site, a canonical pointing at a different URL, or an X-Robots-Tag header set by a CDN rule can each remove a page from search — and from the index AI Overviews draw on. These show as warnings here. For a full audit including redirects, speed and links, run the SEO checker; to see how the link looks when shared, use the Open Graph preview.
FAQ
Questions
Do meta keywords matter?+
No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for ranking for many years, so the checker doesn't look for it.
Why is my description shown differently in Google?+
Google rewrites snippets when it thinks another passage on the page better matches the query. A specific, accurate description is used more often than a generic one.
What if the canonical points to another URL?+
That tells search engines to index the other URL instead. It's correct for duplicates, like tracking-parameter URLs, but a mistake on the page you want to rank.
