ChatGPT SEO (also called SEO for ChatGPT) is the work of making your site retrievable by ChatGPT search and your brand likely to be named in its answers. It runs on two tracks. The first is live search: ChatGPT rewrites a question into search queries, sends them to its search providers and its own index, reads the results and cites some of them. You influence that the way you influence any search engine. The second is model memory: what ChatGPT already knows about your brand from training data, which changes only when new models ship. OpenAI's own guidance for the first track starts with one line in robots.txt: don't block OAI-SearchBot.

This guide covers how ChatGPT picks sources, what to do to get mentioned, what doesn't work, and, since many people searching "ChatGPT for SEO" want the reverse, how to use ChatGPT for SEO tasks.

How does ChatGPT search pick sources?

OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT describes the flow in more detail than most SEO guides do:

  1. Deciding to search. ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information, or the user can switch search on.
  2. Rewriting the query. When it uses search partners, ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries". OpenAI's example turns a long question about CCR8 cancer drugs into "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025", then sends a more specific follow-up query after reading the first results.
  3. Adding context. ChatGPT may use approximate location from the IP address (the example rewrites "good restaurants near me" into "top restaurants San Francisco"), and with memory on it may use saved memories when rewriting.
  4. Retrieving. The queries go to third-party search providers. The same help page points readers to the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify for how those providers handle queries. OpenAI also runs its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot.
  5. Answering and citing. The model writes the answer; responses that used search may include inline citations and a Sources panel.

Two practical points come out of this. You rank for the rewritten query, not the user's original wording, and the rewritten queries look like ordinary search queries, often with a year or location added. And because Microsoft is one of the providers, your visibility in Bing's index is part of your ChatGPT visibility.

Which OpenAI crawlers matter for ChatGPT SEO?

OpenAI's crawler documentation lists separate user agents with separate jobs:

User agent What it does robots.txt effect
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features Sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI recommends allowing it. Changes take about 24 hours to apply.
GPTBot Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models Disallowing it signals your content should not be used for training. It does not control search inclusion.
ChatGPT-User Fetches pages for certain user-initiated actions in ChatGPT and custom GPTs Because a user starts the action, robots.txt rules may not apply. It is not used to decide what appears in search.
OAI-AdsBot Checks the safety of pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT Visits only pages submitted as ads; its data is not used for training.

The configuration most brands want is "visible in search, opted out of training" or "visible in both". For the first:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Also check your CDN and firewall. Bot-protection rules that challenge unknown user agents can block OAI-SearchBot even when robots.txt allows it. OpenAI's publisher FAQ adds one more detail: if a page is disallowed but OpenAI learns its URL from a search provider or other pages, it may still show just the link and title in ChatGPT Atlas. To prevent that, use a noindex meta tag and let the crawler fetch the page so it can see it.

Retrieval vs memory: two routes into ChatGPT answers

Live search (retrieval) Model memory (training)
When it's used Questions about current info, products, prices, comparisons, local results Questions answered without search, and background knowledge in every answer
What controls it Search provider indexes, OAI-SearchBot access, your rankings for rewritten queries Content that existed on the web before the model's training cutoff, subject to GPTBot opt-outs
How fast it changes After recrawl, days With new model versions, months
Citations shown Yes, links to sources Usually none
What you can do SEO for Bing and OpenAI's index, extractable pages, third-party coverage Consistent, widely repeated facts about your brand across the web

Commercial prompts ("best X for Y", "X vs Y", "X pricing") are the kind that benefit from current information, which is when OpenAI says ChatGPT may search automatically. That makes the retrieval track the one where ChatGPT SEO work pays off fastest. Memory still shapes how the model frames you, which is why consistent third-party descriptions matter over the long run.

How to get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT

1. Open the door for OAI-SearchBot

Allow it in robots.txt and at the CDN level, then confirm it is fetching pages in your server logs. The free AI crawler checker tests robots.txt rules for OpenAI's and other AI crawlers. See our AI crawlers guide for the full list.

2. Be well indexed in Bing

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix crawl errors. Bing supports IndexNow, a protocol for notifying participating search engines when a URL is added, updated or deleted; Google does not participate. If Bing has not indexed your pricing or comparison page, it cannot come back from a Bing-backed query.

3. Rank for the queries ChatGPT actually sends

Take your target prompts and write down the search queries ChatGPT would likely generate from them: shorter, keyword-like, often with the current year or a location. Then check who ranks for those queries in Bing and Google. The free query fan-out tool helps generate the likely sub-queries.

4. Get onto the pages ChatGPT cites

For "best tool" and "which should I choose" prompts, ChatGPT often cites comparison articles, review platforms, forums and industry roundups rather than vendor sites. Look at the Sources panel for your target prompts, list the cited domains, and work on those pages: get included, correct outdated facts, supply data the author is missing. Citation tracking automates collecting those domains across many prompts.

5. Make your own pages easy to quote

  • Put facts in HTML text, in the initial response: product category, who it's for, pricing, limits, integrations. Don't hide them in images, PDFs, tabs that load later, or behind logins.
  • Answer the question in the first two to three sentences of a page or section.
  • Use tables for comparisons and specifications.
  • Publish honest comparison pages ("X vs Y") with clear criteria. If you don't, someone else's page will be the source.
  • Add dated, sourced numbers where you have them.

6. Keep your entity story consistent

ChatGPT merges what many sources say. If your site says "project management software", G2 says "collaboration tool" and a directory lists last year's pricing, the answer may mix all three. Align your descriptions, keep profiles current, and use schema.org Organization markup with sameAs links to official profiles.

7. Cover shopping if you sell products

ChatGPT answers product questions with shopping results, and its search help page lists Shopify's privacy policy alongside Microsoft's for its search providers. Our ChatGPT shopping guide covers product data and feeds.

8. Measure with repeated prompts

Pick 20–50 prompts buyers would ask, run each several times, and record whether you're mentioned, your position in the answer, the sentiment, and which sources are cited. Compare against named competitors. Our ChatGPT visibility tracker runs this on a schedule (aeotime is our product). It collects answers through OpenAI's API with web search on, which can differ slightly from what a logged-in user sees in the ChatGPT app. On the traffic side, OpenAI says referral URLs from ChatGPT search carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, so you can segment those visits in GA4.

What doesn't work for ChatGPT SEO

  • Blocking every OpenAI bot and expecting search visibility. Blocking GPTBot alone is fine. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers.
  • Keyword stuffing. Research on generative engines (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement, and on Perplexity it scored 10% below the unmodified baseline.
  • Prompt injection or hidden text aimed at AI. It is manipulative, can breach search engine spam policies, and puts your brand at risk if it's found.
  • Counting on llms.txt. OpenAI's crawler documentation doesn't mention it. See what is llms.txt for the evidence.

Using ChatGPT for SEO: what it's good at

The other half of "ChatGPT for SEO" is using ChatGPT as an assistant for SEO work. It is useful for text-heavy, checkable tasks and unreliable for anything that needs data it doesn't have.

Good uses:

  • Clustering a keyword export into topics and intent groups
  • Drafting outlines from a SERP analysis you've done yourself
  • Writing title tag and meta description variants within character limits
  • Generating JSON-LD for FAQ, Product or Organization markup (then validate it with a schema validator)
  • Writing regex for Search Console filters or redirect rules
  • Summarizing competitor pages to find gaps in your own
  • Rewriting dense paragraphs into answer-first sections

Where it fails:

  • Search volumes and difficulty scores. ChatGPT has no keyword database. Numbers it gives without a connected tool are guesses. Use real keyword data.
  • Current rankings. Search results in ChatGPT are not a rank tracker.
  • Facts about your own product. It may repeat outdated information, which is the problem ChatGPT SEO is trying to fix.
  • Publishing at scale. Google's guidance on generative AI content says generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy.

A few prompts that work well:

Cluster these 200 keywords into topic groups. For each group, give the
dominant search intent (informational, commercial, transactional) and the
single best page type to target it. Return a table.

Rewrite this section so the first two sentences directly answer
"[question]". Keep every fact and number. Do not add new claims.

Write 5 title tags under 60 characters for a page about [topic] targeting
"[keyword]". Put the keyword near the start. No clickbait.

ChatGPT SEO checklist

  • OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and at the CDN; decision made on GPTBot
  • Site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemap submitted, IndexNow set up
  • Key facts (category, pricing, audience) in plain HTML on your own pages
  • Comparison pages published for the matchups buyers ask about
  • Cited third-party domains listed for your top prompts, with an outreach plan
  • 20–50 prompts tracked across repeated runs; utm_source=chatgpt.com segmented in analytics

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the crawler for model training and OAI-SearchBot as the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot to opt out of training and still allow OAI-SearchBot to stay eligible for search answers.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI's publisher documentation describes no paid route into organic search answers; its guidance is to allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI does document a separate ads format, with an OAI-AdsBot crawler that checks pages submitted as ads, but that is advertising, not a citation in the answer.

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs from its search results, so the visits show up in Google Analytics and similar tools under that source. Not every visit that ChatGPT drives carries it, for example when someone types in a brand name they saw in an answer, so treat the number as a floor.

Why does ChatGPT mention different brands each time I ask?

Answers are generated, not looked up, so wording and brand choices vary between runs. When search is on, the rewritten queries, the retrieved pages, your location and saved memories can all change the result. That is why visibility should be measured as a rate across repeated runs, not from one screenshot.
